Noel Night

Noel Night is a lovely tradition in Detroit where all the museums are open and stores are open late and all kinds of special events go on all around Midtown.  It used to be (14 years ago) just the Institute of Art and the Library with some stands in between as I recall but it is now enormous.  And with the mild weather, they said 40,000 people were there!  Jeff was invited to do poetry at one of the venues so we ventured out as a family.  The boys don't hear Jeff the poet very often, so we wondered what they would think.  Jeff started with the one about Casey's baptism, which Casey seems to sort of know is about him.  Then he did his McDonalds poem, which many of our readers have heard I think, but it involves Casey, aged 2, asking the cashier for a Happy Meal with a My Little Pony which would be considered the "girl toy," and the cashier's response and then what Jeff wishes he would have said.  At the Noel Night venue, he didn't say anything about the poem before he started it and when it got to the part about wanting the my little pony, Casey leaned across me and excitedly said to Sam, "Oh Sam!  This one is about you!"  I guess in the midst of Sam's interest in all things pink and often selecting the "girl toy" at McDonalds, we never told Casey that he used to do that too.  Anyway, it was nice to have them hear Jeff's poetry and then we got to enjoy some other parts of Noel Night together.  It all ends with a massive Christmas Carol singalong in the middle of Woodward Avenue - it was really nice!!
