What a great night

I spent the evening watching our 2 boys in the bath tub. Casey would splash and Sam would crack up, then Casey would laugh and Sam would laugh back again. This went on and on and eventually they were both in total belly laugh mode and it was truly delightful to hear.
Then, once they were asleep, it was all business with CNN and election results. What an incredible evening in American history! I had really prepared myslef to have to go to bed with no decision, ala 2000 when we traveled to Denmark to visit my sister and Nicolai over Thanksgiving still not knowing who the preseident was going to be. But not this time. We teared up listening to Obama's speech. I loved when he talked about needing everyone's help to make the changes we need, needing a spirit of "service and sacrafice". We loved the shots of that incredibly diverse crowd of people in Grant Park. Our favorite shots were of my Godmother Maria who was right in there cheering and crying and just loving the moment. She has know Barack Obama for quite awhile and I am sure last night was beyond amazing for her and her family.

After the hoopla came a different set of tears as we talked about how Obama will be the first President our boys will be aware of and how that will be true for a whole slew of little kids we know. How will that shape their world view? A black President won't seem new or monumental to them. When they turn 18, the Beloit College Class Mindset List will say something like "The President has never been a job for only white males" What a remarkable shift this will be in our American culture. What a privilege to raise two little white males in such a time. We hope for a smooth transition and for a new spirit of service and sacrafice in our nation.
i thank you God for this most amazing day
