The Baptism

We had a really great weekend. On Saturday, we had some friends and family to the house to sing some songs, pray some prayers and make some promises about supporting and nurturing Casey in his life, guiding him in his faith life and we even committed to being living examples of what it means to follow Jesus. Pretty hefty stuff! This was important to us, as it gave us the opportunity to share this special time with a larger circle of folks who are part of Casey’s life. On Sunday, Casey was baptized at the 11 am service. There were 6 babies and one adult and no one was screaming! Casey went first, and demonstrated to all present that he does in fact know his name. Jeff handed him to Pastor Jack and when Jack said his name, Casey looked right at him, as if to say “Yes?”, and then when Pastor Rod said his name, Casey looked over at him in the same way. (Picture in previous post) It was actually pretty funny. After all the babies were sprinkled, the congregation responded by congratulating them and welcoming them to the Body of Christ. At Sunday Night Alive, Pastor Gary Williams and his wife Greta, friends of ours from People’s UMC in Detroit, lead the congregation in praying over Casey once again. It was a wonderful day of being prayed for and celebrated by this fabulous congregation. Infant baptism is sort of a funny thing really; Casey probably doesn’t feel any different and he won’t remember any of these events. But it’s an important opportunity for us as his parents to stand up and say that we do intend to raise Casey in the community of faith and that we do understand him to be a gift from God. And it’s really comforting to know that we are not in this grand task alone, that we have friends, family and even a whole congregation committed to helping us do that. So, we were all pooped out Sunday night. What a neat feeling though to know that as tired as we were, we were also that blessed. Enjoy some pictures ….



Parents, Godparents and Pastor Jack with Casey


Ethan Harnish is about 3 weeks older than Casey and was baptized also (Pastor Jack is his Grandpa - aww). He lives in Pennsylvania but he and Casey are pals. This looks like "Mom, what happened to this kid's hair?" Even the waters of baptism cannot tame this 'do!
