Happy Birthday Sam!

Sam is 6!!  Can you believe it?  We can't.  Sam loves his birthday and he looks forward to it for weeks.  This year, we are going the sleepover route for birthday celebrations.  As I type, Sam and a school friend are watching a movie surrounded by every pillow and blanket we own.
Sam is almost done with kindergarten and he has really loved it.  Turns out he is pretty bright and school has come naturally to him.  One day I was called into the classroom at pick up for what felt like bad news.  What I heard though was that Sam had tested really well in reading and would be bringing home chapter books from then on.  He also likes math, music and art.
There isn't much he likes more than his big brother.  He and Casey have tough moments but for the most part, Sam thinks Casey is pretty great.
Sam has a lot of sweet little boy left in him which is wonderful.  He still loves to snuggle, especially with his dad.  He holds hands with me everywhere we go and still has moments of shyness where he tries to hide behind my legs.  He is sweet, affectionate and kind.
He is also hilarious.  Sometimes with timing and humor beyond his years.  He has an alter ego named Mr. Grump who has funny things to say and a really bizarre voice.
Sam is thoughtful and observant - he notices people and details more than most.  He is becoming more and more self sufficient - he wakes up and gets dressed and finds his shoes and school stuff and then just waits for everyone else to be ready to go.   And his sleeping is remarkable - he goes from wide awake and running around to sound asleep and vice versa.  Compared to some other people around here - ahem - that take forever to fall asleep and wake up.
Sam thinks deep thoughts - and now and then he will drop a doozy on us.  From a quiet back seat will come "Mom, why do people have to die?"  Well, um....   He loves finding patterns or understanding how something works.
Here's another cool thing about Sam - a new dry erase board where he can write whatever he wants and this is what he writes -

He is really just a great kid - we are so lucky to have him in our family.  He makes us laugh and lets us know he loves us every day.  We wouldn't trade him for the world!

Who has two thumbs and is six?  THIS GUY!
